MRC and the fellowship of the Academy of Medical Sciences Tenure-track clinician scientist is open only to hospital doctors, dentists and general practitioners. Medical or dental graduates should be a special registrar (STR) or consultant status or equivalent level in general practice. Nurses, midwives and other allied health professionals must have completed their professional training. All applicants must have obtained a PhD, DPhil or MD in basic science or clinical research project, or wish to do so by the time they take the award. This PhD Jewish Scholarships studentship will address a major knowledge gap on the potential for interactive effects of OA with important coastal marine contaminants in the early life stages of commercially relevant flatfish species. The experimental exposure studies will be conducted using bespoke facilities already present at the Cefas Weymouth laboratory. Jewish Scholarships Effects will be studied using a combination of molecular, physiological and bio-imaging tools to examine key endpoints to reveal any potential for interactive effects of OA and toxicant stressors. The Jewish Scholarships student will thus receive training in a wide variety of experimental methods and will benefit from working within large, vibrant and interdisciplinary research teams on a highly topical project with direct applications for advising fisheries management.

Two proposals Jewish Scholarships for doctoral students from September 2011 are available to projects in the research group "self-organization in nonequilibrium systems" in IRPHE and the research group "Multiphysics" M2P2 to work. These two groups have spent several years together on the same kind of physical problems. The first promotion is experimental, while the second combines the theoretical and numerical analysis.
The Jewish Scholarships projects will be the behavior of deformable objects such as small bubbles or micro-capsules in combination with study
hydrodynamic flow in several typical configurations.

PhD Jewish Scholarship in Advanced Synthetic Aperture Ultrasound Imaging

A 3-year PhD scholarship is available at the Department of Electrical Engineering from April 2011. The project is sponsored by the Advanced Technology Foundation project: “Implementation of synthetic aperture ultrasound methods” made in collaboration between the Center for Fast Ultrasound Imaging at DTU, the ultrasound manufacturer BK Medical and Rigshospitalet.

The project seeks to develop methods for synthetic aperture (SA) ultrasound imaging and its commercial implementation. SA imaging is a radical departure from conventional ultrasound and can give many advantages in terms of better contrast, resolution, and frame rate. CFU has been a pioneer in developing SA imaging and has been the first to demonstrate blood velocity imaging using the SA concept. This has been done using the experimental scanner RASMUS.

A new scanner SARUS has now been developed and forms the basis for this project. The new scanner can acquire data in 1024 channels and is the first scanner, which makes it possible to acquire real time three-dimensional SA data.

Two stage beam forming methods for 3D imaging
The PhD project will investigate two-stage beamforming for 3D SA ultrasound imaging. A method for two-stage beamforming has been developed at CFU and B-K Medical, and this can significantly cut down on the demands for SA processing by beamforming in two stages. This maintains nearly all the advantages of current SA imaging at a significantly lower cost. This method will be implemented on the SARUS scanner and integrated with new 2D matrix probes with a very high number of elements (1024 elements). The project includes developing the methods, implementing them on SARUS, and finally performing clinical test in collaboration with Rigshospitalet.

We hope you can start in April 2011. The applicants should have a background in signal and image processing. Knowledge of medical imaging and acoustics will also be beneficial.

Qualifications
You should have a master’s degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master’s degree in engineering.

Description

At the beginning the student will join a running experiment on the gas-phase targets in order to acquire basic experimental skills. At the later stage he/she will participate on development of a novel experiment with liquid micro-jet targets. If interested, the student can also do molecular modelling (quantum chemistry / molecular dynamics) in order to support the experimental results.

The Funza Lushaka Bursary, South Africa Education Scholarships

Funza Lushaka Bursary Programme is a multi-year programme that promotes teaching in public schools. Full-cost bursaries are available to enable eligible students to complete a full teaching qualification in an area of national priority. Recipients of these bursaries will be required to teach at a public school for the same number of years that they receive the bursary.

Qualified recipients of the bursary must request placement in a province of their choice. The provincial education department (PED) concerned will determine whether there is suitable post available. If there is not, the applicant may be placed in a PED that does have suitable vacancies. Please note that bursars cannot choose the school in which they would like to be placed.

This is a national programme that is run locally at every higher education institution (HEI) that offers teacher education programmes. It is funded by the National Treasury and executed by the Department of Education (DoE). The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) administers the programme on behalf of the DoE via the Student Financial Aid Office at each HEI.

Eligible students must meet the admission criteria of the academic programme at the HEI to which they apply, and must meet the national selection criteria for a Funza Lushaka bursary. Funded by the European Commission, the MA in International Performance Research (MAIPR) Erasmus Mundus programme from autum 2011 will be offered by four internationally renowned academic institutions: the University of Warwick in the UK; the Universiteit van Amsterdam (the University of Amsterdam) in The Netherlands; the Tampereen Yliopisto (the University of Tampere) in Finland, the latter in cooperation with Helsingin Yliopisto (the University of Helsinki); and the Arts University of Belgrade (Serbia)

Students study at two of these institutions, a home and a mobility institution. The two institutions at which you study – and either can be your home or your mobility location – will be a combination of Warwick, Amsterdam and Arts Belgrade. You also conduct fieldwork and arts research in these countries. You will spend from the beginning of the course until the December holiday break at your home institution. You then go to your mobility institution, where you will study until the end of June. When you finish your mobility period, you will be expected to complete your studies at your home university.

Current projects of the group focus on developing computational models that explain human action and perception by means of Bayesian online inference for nonlinear dynamical systems. An additional emphasis is placed on linking these dynamic models to experimental work on perception and action.
The research is conducted at the MPI-CBS in Leipzig, Germany, an internationally leading centre for cognitive and imaging neuroscience. The projects are partly in collaboration with the Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging in London, UK. For theoretical work, the institute is equipped with high-performance computing facilities. For experimental work, the institute is equipped with a 7.0T MRI scanner, two 3.0T MRI scanners, a 306 channels MEG system, a TMS and several EEG systems. All facilities are supported by experienced physics and IT staff.

Applicants must have a PhD (or equivalent) in physics, neuroscience, or a related field and should be able to demonstrate a consistently outstanding academic record including publications. The ideal candidate has expertise in nonlinear dynamical systems, has worked in neuroscience before and is motivated to apply his/her expertise in a multidisciplinary team (mathematicians, engineers, psychologists). The candidate is expected to be an innovative and enthusiastic researcher with an interest in working on projects within the general framework of the group. We are a research group at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and at the University of Heidelberg in Germany that uses organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, cell biology and microbiology approaches to develop innovative research tools and to answer important biological questions.

The goal of our research is to gain better understanding of biological interfaces and to advance our ability to effectively control and direct behavior of cells and bacteria. We are working on the development of biologically active functional polymer surfaces and materials, "smart" switchable polymer surfaces, and gradient surfaces that we use for fundamental investigation of biological interfaces, for studying cell- and bacteria-surface interactions and for studying biofouling. The motivation behind our research is: to learn how cells and bacteria interact with surfaces; to develop biocompatible, biomimetic and "smart" materials that can improve performance of existing biomedical or cell culture devices; and to use this knowledge and materials to achieve control over behavior of cells and bacteria on surfaces. Our research is very interdisciplinary and we closely collaborate with biologists and physicists.

The International Institute of Social History (IISH) of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) is located in Amsterdam. Founded in 1935, it is one of the world's largest documentary and research institutions in the field of social history in general and the history of the labour movement in particular. IISH holds over 3,000 archival collections, some one million printed volumes and about as many audio-visual items. Gathered from all over the world, the IISH collections provide a unique body of materials on social conditions and social movements. Facilitating the use of these materials for research by the global scholarly community has always been central to the mission of the IISH. Eligible Candidates

Call for applications for the 2010/2011 academic year

The Politecnico di Torino offers international students the possibility to receive a scholarship and other benefits to graduate from the Politecnico di Torino attending a Master of Science program in Engineering or Architecture.
The initiative is promoted by the Politecnico di Torino and the Compagnia di San Paolo.

The activities will begin in September 2010.

Requirements

Academic requirements

In order to be admitted into a Master of Science program, applicants must possess a university degree equivalent to a Bachelor of Science degree, which is approximately equivalent to three or four years after secondary school, depending on the number of secondary school years; alternatively, they must have completed at least 8 semesters of university courses, in a national school system that requires 11 or 12 years of study before enrolling in university.

Application is open to students who:

are not Italian citizens, or are Italian citizens who are also in possess of another citizenship;
are not already enrolled in a Master of Science program of the Politecnico di Torino before the 2010/2011 academic year;
are not recipients of any other scholarships, Italian or foreign.

Obtaining a degree at the Politecnico di Torino

To graduate at the Politecnico di Torino, students must attain a total of 120 credits, including exams and the final dissertation. A plan of studies must be outlined under the guidance of the student’s academic tutor to identify, in relation to the student’s previous academic career, the courses additionally required to complete the program of studies for the Master of Science in which the student is enrolled at the Politecnico di Torino. The time required to graduate is approximately two years. However, the effective duration is also dependent upon each student’s capacity. Note also that the time required for the compulsory Italian course is not considered in the estimated duration of the program.

Please note that scholarship recipients must attend their course for its entire length (2 years – 120 credits). Students who have already attended other university courses can ask for a credit transfer up to a maximum of 10 credits per year (20 credits in total). Please note that credits achieved in preparatory courses or in the first year/second year in systems where preuniversity education lasts 10/11 years can not be taken into account.

Scholarships

Selection criteria

Applicants will be selected on the basis of their previous academic career and of their Curriculum Vitae.

Amount of the scholarship

The gross amount of the scholarship is 6.000 Euro per year for the complete period. The exact net sum is dependent upon the individual tax conditions of each student, which can be verified only upon the arrival of the student.
The amount of the scholarship will not be increased in case the student will need more time to graduate than indicated.
The allocation of the scholarship is dependent upon the submission, within 10 days from the arrival in Italy of the student, of the original documentation, which must correspond with the documentation attached to the online form (see the “Selection outcomes” section below).
Payment of the scholarship occurs periodically. The first instalment is dependent upon the possession of the relevant documentation (enrollment certification, residence permit, Italian fiscal code, and bank account in the name of the scholarship recipient), all obtainable upon arrival in Italy; for this reason, the first instalment is not paid at the moment of arrival at the Politecnico di Torino, but in the course of the following months.

Requirements to maintain the scholarship

Given that it is not possible to combine the benefits received from more than one scholarship, students who are assigned another study grant while receiving the Politecnico di Torino scholarship must promptly notify the Politecnico di Torino.
Payment of the scholarship will be suspended if the academic performance of the recipient does not meet a satisfactory level.

How to apply

Scholarship winners will be selected among the students who have successfully completed and submitted the online application form within March 10th, 2010.

Selection outcomes

Following the closure of the online application form, a special commission will meet to assess the applications.

At the end of the selection process, a provisional list of standings will be composed with the names of the students who have been awarded a scholarship and the names of the eligible applicants that may be awarded a scholarship in the event of one or more renunciations.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE AFFIXING OF THE LIST OF STANDINGS TO THE OFFICIAL REGISTER OF THE POLITECNICO DI TORINO WILL BE, FOR ALL INTENTS AND PURPOSES, THE ONLY OFFICIAL NOTIFICATION OF INCLUSION IN THE LIST OF SELECTIONS AND, FOR STUDENTS WITH THE APPROPRIATE QUALIFICATIONS, THE ONLY OFFICIAL COMMUNICATION THAT THEY HAVE BEEN AWARDED A SCHOLARSHIP.

An e-mail message will be sent to all scholarship recipients and eligible applicants summarising the terms for the disbursement of the scholarship. This message will be sent to the address(es) specified by the students themselves on the online application form. NEVERTHELESS, THIS MESSAGE DOES NOT CONSTITUTE AN OFFICIAL COMMUNICATION OF THE OUTCOME OF THE SELECTION.

The scholarship awardees and eligible applicants who wish to confirm their position must take the following steps:

download the scholarship acceptance form which will be published together with the list of selection outcomes, fill it in and fax it to the number +39 011 090 6329. Failure to send in the acceptance fax within the given period will constitute a definitive renunciation and the scholarship will be reassigned accordingly.
upon arrival in Italy scholarship recipients must hand in the original documentation, which was previously attached to the online application form, to the Politecnico di Torino. Before handing in the aforementioned documentation, we recommend that you make photocopies for yourself. We ask that you not hand in any other documentation other than that which has been required, and put all the documentation in a single folder bearing your name, surname and "Compagnia di San Paolo - Politecnico project". We reemphasize that the information given in the documents must correspond to that attached to the online application form. Failure to hand in the original documentation within 10 days from the student’s arrival according to the above conditions will result in the non-allocation of the scholarship.

Publication of the final list of standings is foreseen for May 2010.

We emphasize that the Politecnico di Torino assumes no responsibility for the applicant's failure to view the list of standings and/or the terms for the acceptance of the scholarships as published online and on the Official Register of the Politecnico.

In all the e-mail messages and the correspondence sent to the Politecnico following the awarding of the scholarship, the recipient must clearly specify "Politecnico project".

Facilities

The amount of tuition fees for the 2010/2011 academic year is about 1750 Euro. Students from low-income families can be entitled to a reduction or a waiver of tuition fees. In order to obtain such benefit, students must provide an official declaration about:

the composition of their family unit
the revenue generated abroad in 2009
the property and real estate assets generated abroad at December 31st, 2009

These declarations, issued by the competent authorities of the foreign country where the family's income is generated, must be translated into Italian and certified by the Italian Embassy or Consulate. Please see also: Information for students coming from particularly poor countries.
Scholarship recipients, together with the Master of Sciences courses, will benefit from:

an intensive Italian language course, compulsory and free of charge
additional services offered to the student community (access to the Politecnico libraries and computer laboratories, WI-FI (Wireless LAN), etc.); scholarship recipients will also be entitled to all the services offered by the regional university student assistance organisation, Ente regionale per il DIritto allo Studio Universitario (EDISU Piemonte) at full fee: student canteen service, cultural and recreational activities, sports activities, libraries with lending service, etc. (for more information visit the Campus Facilities section)

assistance by the Stage and Job Placement office for internship and employment.

Notes

Enrolment at the Politecnico includes insurance coverage for accidents occurring on the university premises.

Medical insurance for emergencies (First Aid), as required by the law for non-EU citizens, is about 100 EURO per year. Upon their arrival in Italy, students must pay this amount to INA Assitalia: this is required for the conversion of the entry visa into a residence permit. We advise students to go to the Italian Embassy or Consulate to inform themselves on the necessary requirements to obtain an entry visa in Italy.
